CHILE: Biden backing provides fillip for Piñera

Chile’s President Sebastián Piñera this week became the first Latin American leader to hold a phone conversation with Joe Biden since his victory in the US presidential elections. Biden promised to help the region overcome the twin health and economic crises caused by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, and he hailed Chile’s decision to draft a new constitution. This support provided a brief respite for Piñera as protesters, unappeased by the plebiscite success to replace the current constitution, which dates back to the dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990), continue to gather in large numbers to make more demands of his government.
