HONDURAS: New transparency ministry proves contentious

President Juan Orlando Hernández last week swore in communications minister María Andrea Matamoros as head of the newly created transparency ministry. The new portfolio was set up to quell doubts which have multiplied in response to irregularities surrounding the use of state resources to address the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic [WR-20-43] and which are set to multiply further over the response to Tropical Storm Eta and Hurricane Iota. The reaction by civil-society and the main business lobby Consejo Hondureño de la Empresa Privada (Cohep) to the new ministry suggests that Hernández has yet to convince his critics.
