In brief: Mexico’s unemployment rate improves slightly

* Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released new figures which show the unemployment rate was 4.7% in October. This is a 0.4 percentage-point improvement on the 5.1% unemployment rate registered in September, but nevertheless higher than the 3.6% rate in October 2019. The Inegi figures also show an increase in the number of people in the workforce (defined as economically active people who are either employed, or actively seeking employment) in October compared with previous months. In October, 1.7m people entered the workforce, meaning that of the 12m people who ceased being economically active in April, when restrictions imposed to stop the spread of coronavirus (Covid-19) affected economic activity and the labour market, 10.2m have now been reincorporated into the workforce. Inegi’s survey also recorded an increase in informality, with 29.7m people in informal employment in October, compared with 28m in September.
