CHILE: Pressure mounts on Piñera

More than one year on from the social unrest that engulfed Chile and from which it has never emerged, President Sebastián Piñera finally replaced the director general of Chile’s Carabineros militarised police, Mario Rozas. The political opposition has long echoed the calls of protesters for Rozas to be fired. If Piñera had hoped that Rozas’ departure would placate protesters, however, he would have been left disappointed. They are demanding a profound reform of the Carabineros, whose image has been seriously affected by growing evidence of violent repression of protests. Some opposition members of congress are even pursuing a dangerous democratic course by calling for Piñera’s mandate to be curtailed after he took steps to block another opposition-proposed move to permit people to make further withdrawals from their pension pots in the face of the economic difficulties posed by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
