Argentina’s President Alberto Fernández declared three days of national mourning on 25 November to mark the passing of the country’s most famous footballing son and one of the finest players of his or any generation, Diego Armando Maradona. Fernández said that Maradona always recalled the wonder goal that helped to sink England in the quarter finals of the World Cup in 1986, saying that in the changing room he had told his teammates that there were many sad people in Argentina and that “I felt the obligation to make those people happy”. Fernández feels a similar obligation but delivering on it, especially amidst a profound health and economic crisis, is proving to be a huge challenge -and it could soon be harder still.
