US urges Mexico to join Clean Network initiative

Mexico: On 25 November US ambassador to Mexico Christopher Landau called on Mexico to join the US Department of State’s ‘Clean Network’ initiative which seeks to safeguard data privacy and ostensibly keep Chinese firms out of ‘5G’ telecommunications infrastructure. Making his comments at the ‘México5G’ virtual forum organised by Mexico’s federal senate, Landau did not explicitly mention China but emphasised the importance of having a “secure and trustworthy network, both for users and private enterprise”, expressing further his worry about including “unreliable providers” in future networks. Landau also highlighted the potential of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) on regional trade, and how it further encourages investments in technology due to the inclusion of chapters on telecommunications, intellectual property, and digital commerce, which were not included in the agreement’s predecessor, the North American Free Trade Agreement. Landau stressed that the Clean Network, of which more than 50 countries and 170 telecommunications companies are participants, would generate confidence in Mexico’s digital growth, and in turn promote economic growth and national security.
