In brief: Ecuador’s workers face wage freeze

* Ecuador’s Labour Minister Andrés Isch has announced that the national minimum wage will remain at US$400 per month in 2021, after negotiations between representatives of workers and employers broke down, leaving the labour ministry responsible for determining next year’s minimum wage. Citing the country’s deflation (inflation is projected to finish the year at -1.01%), Isch claimed that an increase could not be justified, but instead announced plans for two one-off subsidies – a US$60 payment to all 380,000 workers who receive the minimum wage, and a US$100 payment to all those who have become unemployed as a result of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, reportedly numbering around 200,000.
