In brief: Andean countries sign new environmental agreement

* The governments of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru have signed the Andean environmental charter, a new multilateral agreement intended to facilitate co-operation in efforts to protect local ecosystems and tackle the climate crisis, as well as to establish shared goals for sustainable development. The charter was brought to a meeting of the Andean Community (CAN) by Colombia’s President Iván Duque, the regional trade bloc’s pro tempore president, who claimed that it would facilitate the protection of biodiversity in the region and reinforce efforts to tackle deforestation, among other priorities. Duque also noted that the agreement will help the countries of the Andean region to mount a united front on the global stage, to issue “a call to action” demanding that “the countries that have contributed the most to greenhouse gas emissions” support environmental protection efforts in the countries that are most affected.
