In brief: Brazilian gov’t outlines 2021 privatisation plan

* The council of Brazil’s Programa de Parcerias e Investimentos (PPI), the government’s investments and partnerships programme, has approved the inclusion of 58 new state assets and two new projects in its 2021 portfolio; the plan is to auction off a total of 115 assets next year, with an expected investment of R$367bn (US$70.3bn), according to the federal government. The new projects incorporated in next year’s PPI include the re-auctioning of the concession for the Malha Oeste railway line; auctions for the transmission and generation of electricity; and concessions for the sustainable management of forests in the Amazon. Nine state-owned companies will be up for privatisation, including electricity firm Eletrobras and the postal service, Correios; and 16 ports and 24 airports are included in the concessions programme. The PPI’s special secretary, Martha Sellier, noted that the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic had not halted the government’s divestment efforts this year, with 18 auctions and other projects carried out so far, a number expected to rise to 29 by the end of 2020, with an expected total of R$39.1bn in investments and R$4.7bn in grants.
