Big spending budget not enough to end Chile’s protests

“The product of the greatest fiscal effort in our history.” This was how Chile’s chief of staff, Cristián Monckeberg, the secretary general to the presidency, described the 2021 budget which was approved by congress on 28 November after two months of debate. The significant increases in public spending and investment contained within the budget will not suffice, however, to end public protests against the government led by President Sebastián Piñera. The day before its approval, violent clashes in Santiago, and other parts of the country, between members of Chile’s Carabineros militarised police and protesters resulted in more arrests than at any other time this year.
