“What happened last year must not happen again in our country,” Bolivia’s President Luis Arce said while addressing new recruits at the national police academy (Anapol) on 1 December. Arce was alluding to the police mutiny that culminated in the forced resignation of former president Evo Morales (2006-2019) in November last year. Arce’s comments followed an announcement by the Cochabamba departmental public prosecutor’s office that two police chiefs would be investigated in connection with the killing of 10 protesters during a joint military and police operation amid the unrest after Morales’s removal from power. This probe will include an army general who was placed under house arrest last week. Back in power, the left-wing Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) is clamouring for revenge but Arce will need to tread carefully to avoid alienating the security forces.End of preview - This article contains approximately 631 words.
