CUBA: Hopes for a thaw prove premature

A recent rare protest, and an unprecedented meeting between a deputy minister and representatives from the dissident San Isidro Movement (MSI), sparked hopes of a turning point with regard to freedom of expression in Cuba. However, such hopes have since unravelled: the Communist government seems to have shut down dialogue while US-based press advocacy group Inter-American Press Association (Iapa) is warning that the government could in fact be planning further repression.
