Human rights debate reaches international stage

The domestic opposition to Nicolás Maduro’s government has increasingly struggled to mobilise public support within Venezuela, as the failure of large-scale protest movements in 2017 and 2019 has disillusioned much of the population. Opposition leader Juan Guaidó instead appears to have turned to international pressure as the cornerstone of his campaign against Maduro; the proliferation of international economic sanctions in recent years has received considerable attention [RA-20-07], but there are signs that a second angle of attack could be opening, as international human rights organisations seem increasingly prepared to speak out against abuses.
