*The Brazilian association of meat exporters (Abiec) has projected that the country will export 20.2m tonnes (t) of beef by the end of the year. The projected figure is 8.8% higher than total beef exports in 2019 and a new record high volume of exports. Similarly, Abiec said that this year’s total beef exports will be worth some US$8.5bn, 11.8% higher than in 2019 and a new record. Brazil is the world’s largest beef producer and exporter but Abiec has attributed the positive export figures despite the disruption in global trade produced by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic to the strong demand for Brazilian beef in China. The Asian country is now the biggest export market for Brazilian beef and according to Abiec between January and November 780,000t of Brazilian beef were exported to China, an 88% year-on-year increase.
