In brief: Colombia’s economy picks up

* Colombia’s national statistics institute (Dane) has released new figures which show that in October economic activty contracted by 4.53% compared with the same month in 2019. However, this is the smallest year-on-year contraction since the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic began impacting the economy in March. According to the Dane report, activity in the primary sector was down 9.54% year-on-year, while in the secondary sector it was down 8.11%, and in the tertiary sector (services) it was down 2.67%. The latest forecast by the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (Eclac) predicts that Colombia’s GDP will contract by 7% in 2020.
