In brief: Argentine gov’t supports housing project in San Juan province

* The Argentine government led by President Alberto Fernández has signed an agreement for the construction of 1,800 homes in the province of San Juan, on the border with Chile, which was hit on 19 January by a magnitude 6.4 earthquake. The 1,800 homes will be built through the Programa Casa Propria-Construir Futuro housing programme and involve a Ar$7.1bn (US$82.36m) contribution from the national government. President Fernández has signed a separate agreement with San Juan governor, Sergio Uñac, to promote access to housing and an adequate living environment through projects amounting to Ar$186m. The agreements were reached during a visit by President Fernández to areas affected by the earthquake in San Juan; in some settlements, 40% of homes were destroyed by the earthquake.
