REGION: New migrant caravan highlights key test for Biden

The departure last month of a new caravan of migrants from Honduras, heading to Guatemala en route to Mexico and the US, highlighted a major priority for the new US administration led by President Joe Biden with regard to Central America. President Biden has pledged a different approach to the hardline anti-immigration policy pursued by his predecessor Donald Trump (2017-2021) [SSR-20-12]. However, both the caravan, as well as a recent high-level meeting on forced displacement in Central America, again underline the dire economic and security conditions, exacerbated by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic and damage wreaked by recent hurricanes, which are driving irregular migration.
