In brief: Tourism slumps in DR

* The Dominican Republic’s central bank (BCRD) has released new figures which show 205,311 tourists (defined as foreign nationals and non-resident Dominicans) visited the country via air travel in January, a 63.2% drop on the same month in 2020. The decline was mainly explained by a 72.6% drop in the number of foreign nationals, which totalled 103,093. The figure was also down on the 348,464 registered in the month of December 2020, which the BCRD attributes to an “intensification” of preventative measures taken by various countries to stop the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19) at the start of the year. A total of 2.7m tourists visited the Dominican Republic via air travel in 2020, down 62% on the previous year.
