* Ecuador’s foreign trade minister, Iván Ontaneda, has declared that 2020 was an “historic” year for Ecuador’s non-oil exports, which increased by 10% year-on-year despite the economic turmoil caused by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Speaking at a meeting with US investors, Ontaneda said that non-oil exports amounted to US$15bn last year. He highlighted shrimp (US$6bn) and fish (US$1.6bn) exports as key drivers of Ecuador’s foreign trade and said that “Ecuador has shown that it is prepared to supply the world with premium and sustainable food products that meet strict biosecurity protocols”, noting that 90% of jobs in the country are generated by the productive sector. Ontaneda attributed the resilience of the Ecuadorean export sector to “an important shift” in international trade policy under the administration of the outgoing President Lenín Moreno, which he said was “driven by pragmatism, opening new doors to an increasingly globalised world.”
