In brief: Peru tallies pandemic cost on employment

* Peru’s national statistics institute (INEI) has released new figures which show that in 2020 national unemployment was 7.4%, up 3.5 percentage points on 2019 as a result of the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. The same figures show that 2.23m jobs were lost in Peru in 2020 compared with 2019, of which 2.17m were lost in urban areas and 42,800 in rural areas. Meanwhile women were most affected, accounting for over half (1.29m) of the jobs lost.
