ECUADOR: Pérez sees hopes snuffed out

The door slammed shut on the electoral prospects of Yaku Pérez on 14 March. Pérez, the presidential candidate of the indigenous political movement Pachakutik, alleged that he was the victim of electoral fraud in the first round on 7 February and demanded an extensive recount. The electoral disputes tribunal (TCE) rejected his appeal contesting the decision by the national electoral council (CNE) to carry out a minimal recount. The ruling means the second round on 11 April will pit Andrés Arauz, a self-proclaimed left-wing progressive endorsed by former president Rafael Correa (2007-2017), against Guillermo Lasso, a former banker running for the centre-right Movimiento Creo.
