In brief: New study shows pandemic impact on employment in Honduras

* Honduras’s Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras (Unah) has released a new study which shows that the rate of open unemployment increased from 5.7% of the population in 2019 to 10.9% in 2020. The study attributes this to the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic which, along with damage wreaked in November 2020 by hurricanes ‘Eta’ and ‘Iota’, resulted in Honduras’s GDP contracting by 8.5% in 2020. The study highlights that agriculture was the that registered the highest number of job losses in 2020, with the number of jobs in the sector totalling 856,000 in 2020, down from 1.2m in 2019.
