* Costa Rica’s tourism institute (ICT), a government body, has announced that 89,263 international tourists visited Costa Rica in March. This is the highest number since the gradual reopening in August 2020 of borders, which had been closed to stem the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19). The March figure is up from 55,252 in February and 62,200 in January. According to ICT, of the total number of international tourists who visited the country in March, 74.5% were from North America, of which 62,370 were from the US, 2,706 from Mexico and 1,429 from Canada. According to earlier figures from the ICT, just 1.01m international tourists visited Costa Rica in 2020, a third of the more than 3m who visited the country in 2019.
