* Brazil’s economy ministry has released the latest figures from the national employment registry (Novo Caged), which show that 184,140 formal jobs were created in the country in March, the third consecutive month of job creation in the formal sector. Economy Minister
Paulo Guedes hailed this result as yet another sign that Brazil’s economy is recovering from the crisis caused by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
“All the sectors created jobs and all the regions created jobs”, Guedes said, noting that the services sector accounted for 95,000 of the new jobs created last month, a positive sign for the sector that has been the hardest hit by the pandemic. A total 837,074 formal jobs were created in the first quarter of the year, with the job stock in the formal sector totalling 40.2m. Separately, the Brazilian government yesterday (28 April) formalised the relaunch of its job and salary preservation programme, instituted last year to preserve jobs in the context of the pandemic. This benefit (BEm), paid to workers who have had their working hours cut or been furloughed because of the pandemic, helped maintain around 10m jobs last year, the ministry said.
