In brief: Significant rise in poverty in Colombia

* Colombia’s national statistics department (Dane) has released figures showing that monetary poverty affected 42.5% of the population in 2020, a 6.8 percentage point increase on 2019. Meanwhile, extreme poverty increased by 5.1 percentage points compared to the previous year to 15.1%. Whilst poverty in municipal capitals (‘cabeceras municipales’) increased from 32.3% in 2019 to 42.4% in 2020, outside of these capitals the poverty rate was reduced from 47.5% to 42.9%, reflecting the uneven impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. The cities with the highest incidences of poverty were Quibdó (Chocó department), where 66.1% of the population lived in poverty and 30.1% in extreme poverty, and Riohacha (La Guajira), with 57.1% in poverty and 27.7% in extreme poverty. Manizales (Caldas) had the lowest incidence, with 32.4% in poverty and 7.9% in extreme poverty, followed by Medellín (Antioquia), where 32.9% were in poverty and 9.1% in extreme poverty.
