ECUADOR: Lasso changes course and strikes Pachakutik pact

Guillermo Lasso has taken a significant political gamble that could define his presidency. On 15 May, nine days before being sworn-in as president, Lasso struck a deal with the indigenous movement Pachakutik (PK), which picks up the presidency of the national assembly in return for providing governability to Ecuador. Just days earlier Lasso’s centre-right Movimiento Creo was part of a very different informal alliance in the legislature, including Unión por la Esperanza (Unes), the party of former president Rafael Correa (2007-2017).
