VENEZUELA: Agriculture lobbies warn of consequences of fuel shortages

Juan Carlos Montesinos, the president of a Venezuelan small-scale farmers’ association, Asociación Venezolana de Agricultura Familiar (Avaf), warned on 21 April that diesel shortages were leading to a loss of 3m litres of milk and 25,000 tonnes (t) of food a week. Montesinos’ warning came as the country’s federation of agricultural producers (Fedeagro), which represents larger producers, warned that the entire chain of agricultural production in Venezuela is on the verge of collapse, with farms across the country reporting losing harvests due to a lack of petrol fuels.
