Water activists spy opportunity in new constitution

Chile faces a future of water scarcity. A ‘megadrought’ has affected parts of the country for more than a decade, straining water supply systems and reducing reservoir levels, and this scenario is set to worsen. Chile’s vulnerability to water stress is due to climatic factors, which scientists agree have been aggravated by global warming. But many in Chile also argue that the country’s framework for water management has contributed to the problem and that the drafting of a new constitution could be an opportunity to work towards resolving this.
