NICARAGUA: Opposition dealt further blows ahead of elections

In recent days two opposition parties, Partido Conservador (PC) and Partido de Restauración Democrática (PRD), have effectively been eliminated from the 7 November general election after the electoral authority (CSE) cancelled their legal status. A money-laundering investigation has also been launched into high-profile opposition presidential hopeful Cristiana Chamorro Barrios, the daughter of former president Violeta Chamorro (1990-1997), raising question marks over her political future. As with the recently approved electoral reform and appointment of the new CSE [WR-21-16], the moves are subjecting the government led by President Daniel Ortega, who is seeking re-election, to fresh accusations of targeting his opponents ahead of the vote.
