COSTA RICA | Unemployment continues to decrease. On 3 June Costa Rica’s national statistics institute (Inec) released new figures which show that the national unemployment rate for the February-April 2021 rolling quarter was 17.5%. This is an improvement on the 18.7% unemployment rate registered for the January-March 2021 rolling quarter. However, this is an increase of 1.6 percentage points on the unemployment rate in the same period the previous year – a rise which reflects the continued impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic on Costa Rica’s economy which shrank 4.2% in 2020. The figures for the February-April 2021 quarter show that unemployment is higher among women (23.8%) than men (12.9%).
