In brief: Increase in Peru’s agro-exports to EU and UK

* Peru’s main foreign trade lobby, Comex Perú, has released figures showing that agricultural exports to the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom (UK) totalled US$769m in the first four months of 2021, representing a 24.3% increase on the same period last year, when the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic caused a global slump in demand. The Netherlands imported the largest share of agricultural produce (US$411m, up 25.9% year-on-year), followed by Spain (US$160m, up 25%), and the UK (US$63m, up 21%). Avocados were the main agricultural export to the EU and UK by value (US$110m), followed by fresh fruits (US$15m), mangos (US$12m), and asparagus (US$8m). Comex Perú said that improvements are needed in Peru’s chains of production so that the country can continue to grow its trade with Europe without being stymied by efficiency and production problems.
