* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the latest figures on the unemployment rate, which stands at 14.7% for the February-April rolling quarter. This is unchanged from the unemployment rate in January-March, remains the highest figure for the period since current records began in 2012, and is equivalent to 14.8m people being out of work. The unemployment rate has increased by 2.1 percentage points year-on-year. Adriana Beringuy, an Ibge researcher, notes that in the rolling quarter ending in April, “the situation was one of stability for the occupied population (85.9m) and of increase for the unemployed population, with more pressure on the labour market” as a second wave of coronavirus (Covid-19) swept through Brazil in March-April. As a result of the economic crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, Brazil’s employment rate has stayed below 50% since the rolling quarter ending in May 2020.
