In brief: Colombia’s unemployment rate remains high but improves

* Colombia’s national statistics department (Dane) has reported that the national unemployment rate fell to 15.6% in May 2021, down 5.8 percentage points on the same month in 2020. According to the Dane report, there were 3.8m unemployed people in Colombia in May 2021, down from 4.7m in May 2020. The Dane also reported an 18.6% year-on-year increase in the active workforce which now includes over 20.4m workers compared with 17.2m in May 2020. According to the Dane, this increase in employment was driven by year-on-year increases in sales and reparation of vehicles (up 4.1 percentage points), construction (2.6 percentage points), and manufacturing (2.3 percentage points).
