BRAZIL: Vaccine scandal envelops government

The Brazilian government led by President Jair Bolsonaro already has a poor track record where its response to the coronavirus (Covid-19) public health crisis is concerned. A disorganised and denialist approach to tackling the pandemic at a federal level is widely considered to have contributed to the high death toll, which now stands at over 518,000. A parliamentary commission of inquiry (CPI) in the senate, set up to investigate the federal Covid-19 response, has uncovered evidence that the Bolsonaro government was remiss in its procurement of vaccines last year and found indications that the pursuit of herd immunity was its preferred policy for defeating the pandemic. On top of this, there are now signs that corruption was committed in the brokering of some Covid-19 vaccine deals. These allegations indirectly involve Bolsonaro and have the potential to be highly damaging for his government.
