MEXICO: Opposition demands electoral re-run

The opposition alliance Va por México called this week for three gubernatorial elections held on 6 June to be annulled and restaged, alleging various anomalies and even the involvement of organised crime. The party presidents of the right-wing Partido Acción Nacional (PAN), the centrist Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI), and the leftist Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD), which formed the unprecedented electoral alliance, made the allegations during a joint press conference in Mexico City. They claimed that the left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador had unfairly benefitted from a series of irregularities, contributing to its victory in all three of the elections called into question, and they demanded an investigation by the attorney general’s office (FGR).
