In brief: Panama’s tax take exceeds forecast

* Publio de Gracia, the director of Panama’s tax authority (DGI), has announced that Panama’s tax take in the year up to June totalled US$2.76bn, up 31.8% on the amount budgeted for the period and up 23.7% on the amount registered in the same period in 2020. De Gracia said that the figures showed that economic activities were showing signs of improvement following the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Among other things tax revenue has been affected by measures taken by the government to help those affected by the economic impact of the pandemic, such as a general tax amnesty which, in April, President Laurentino Cortizo extended until 31 August.
