In brief: Chile’s finance ministry raises GDP forecast

* Chile’s finance ministry has revised up its GDP growth forecast for this year to 7.5%, up from 6% in April after Chile's economy contracted 5.8% in 2020 as a result of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. According to the finance ministry, the more optimistic forecast takes into account the improvement of the global economy, advancement of global vaccination programmes against Covid-19 and a rise in international copper prices. The new forecast is higher than that of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund which project 6.1% and 6.2% growth respectively but less than that forecast by the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America & the Caribbean, which expects Chile’s GDP to grow 8%.
