ECUADOR: Lasso keen to seal US trade deal

Ecuador’s President Guillermo Lasso announced his government’s intention on 13 July to pursue a free trade deal with the US. This is not likely to go down well with the umbrella indigenous group Confederación de Nacionalidades Indígenas de Ecuador (Conaie), which elected a combative new president in late June. Conaie’s political arm Pachakutik (PK) won 27 of the 137 seats in the national assembly in February’s legislative elections and PK forged a loose alliance with Lasso’s centre-right Movimiento Creo and the left-wing Izquierda Democrática (ID) that saw an indigenous woman, Guadalupe Llori, assume the body’s presidency.
