CHILE: New peak of violence in the south

A new bout of violence that erupted in Chile’s southern region of La Araucanía this week is raising concerns of an escalation of a conflict that successive governments have been at pains to pacify for many years. The mountainous valleys and forests of La Araucanía lie at the heart of the area that the indigenous Mapuche consider to be their ancestral homeland, and lie at the centre of some of the worst violence in the conflict’s decades-long history.
