BRAZIL: Attacks on elections drive institutional tensions

An embattled President Jair Bolsonaro has once again resorted to what he knows best: inflammatory rhetoric that fires up his base and shocks his opponents. This time, Bolsonaro directed his attacks at the country’s electoral system, going so far as to threaten not to hold the presidential elections in October 2022 when he is expected to seek a second term. Bolsonaro’s comments put Brazil’s institutions on edge, with even his political allies signalling that their support could be withdrawn.
