Cuban crackdown commences

A week of uneasy calm in Cuba followed the protests that erupted across the island on 11 July [WR-21-28]. Cuban authorities organised a large gathering in Havana on 17 July which was designed to demonstrate continued support for the Communist government. There were other events of ‘revolutionary reaffirmation’ staged elsewhere, notably in Santiago de Cuba, the capital of the eponymous eastern province, but coercing Cubans on to the streets is not the same as Cubans taking to the streets of their own volition.
