* Costa Rica’s official export promotion agency (Procomer) has released new figures which show the country’s goods exports totalled US$7.1bn in the first half of 2021, up 26% on the same period last year. This increase is the highest registered in the first half of a year of the last five years, although the agency underlines that the figure registered in the first half of 2020 (US$5.6bn) reflected the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. According to Procomer, Costa Rica’s main export was medical and precision equipment, which accounts for 35% of total exports and was up 46% in the first half of 2021 compared with the same period in 2020. The Procomer report highlighted growth in the food industry (up 21%); the chemical-pharmaceutical sector (15%); electrical-electronic goods (40%); metalworking (56%); and plastics (28%). The Procomer report also highlighted growth for the agriculture sector (up 5%) although fishing, one of the sectors most affected by the pandemic, was down 4%.
