In brief: Chile’s economic activity records historic growth

* Chile’s central bank (BCCh) has released the latest figures for the monthly index of economic activity (Imacec), which grew 2.1% in June compared with May – the fourth consecutive month of positive growth – and expanded 20.1% year-on-year. In a statement, Chile’s finance ministry noted that this exceeded market predictions and said that this brings forecasts for year-on-year second quarter GDP growth to over 17% – which would be the highest year-on-year quarterly growth figure recorded in three decades. Finance Minister Rodrigo Cerda attributed this strong economic performance to the economy’s recovery from the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, but added that the historic growth “goes far beyond a rebound effect”. Economy Minister Lucas Palacios attributed the June Imacec to the government’s implementation of “protocols” to encourage economic activity, credit measures to boost payment chains, and to the Covid-19 vaccine rollout.
