COLOMBIA: Action taken against Montoya over ‘false positives’

Mario Montoya, a former general who played a key role in beating back the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) insurgency, will face trial for murder, according to Colombia’s attorney general, Francisco Barbosa. The planned charges relate to the ‘false positives’ scandal, in which Colombia’s transitional justice court (JEP) states that at least 6,402 civilians were murdered and framed as leftist guerrillas. Barbosa’s statement was noteworthy given that the attorney general’s office has so far seemed reluctant to weigh in on false positive cases, with the JEP leading the way in prosecuting former military personnel. It is doubtful that the attorney general’s office will be successful in prosecuting Montoya, however, given that he is already under investigation by the JEP.
