ARGENTINA: Fernández incites controversy with judges

Argentina’s President Alberto Fernández has incited a new controversy this week by suggesting that there should be term limits for the country’s judges. Magistrates have said that the proposal is unconstitutional; that it will undermine the separation of powers; and that it will threaten Argentina’s democracy. The controversy has reignited the concerns that Fernández and the ruling Partido Justicialista (PJ, Peronists) want to push through judicial reforms to co-opt the national judiciary. Concern over this is likely to become a hot topic ahead of the 14 November midterm federal legislative elections.
