BRAZIL: Cinemateca fire reminder of wider issues

A fire consumed parts of a warehouse of Brazil’s cinematheque in São Paulo on 29 July, destroying film archives and historical documents. With the cinematheque currently closed amid a judicial dispute over its management and the government having received multiple warnings, as recently as 20 July, as to the risk of fire, the incident is the latest in a line of cultural tragedies foretold which are a both a symptom and a consequence of the neglect and underfunding of the arts and culture sector in Brazil.
