The struggle for control in two of Mexico’s top courts came to a head this week. The president of the supreme court (SCJN) announced that he would not extend his term, ending the controversy produced by the approval of legislation that would allow him to do this and lead the implementation of a reform he drafted at President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s request [WR-20-50]. Meanwhile, the federal electoral tribunal (TEPJF) was able to overcome an internal crisis produced by the impeachment of its president by his fellow magistrates. These events have led López Obrador to insist on the need to reform all branches of Mexico’s judiciary even though there are fears that this could lead to the co-optation of the courts.
