In brief: Peru announces hardship payment for 13.5m people

* Peru’s Prime Minister Guido Bellido has announced that the government has approved a decree to make emergency payments of PEN$700 (US$170) to families living in poverty as a result of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Bellido said that the payments are intended to reach 13.5m individual Peruvians. The announcement contradicted earlier statements from Bellido, who had previously signalled that the emergency payments would be of PEN$350 and would be made to individuals, rather than families. Further details are due to be published tomorrow (20 August), including eligibility requirements and the timeframe for payments.
