In brief: Brazil to support agricultural producers hit by frosts

* Brazil’s agriculture minister, Tereza Cristina, has announced that agricultural producers in the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, and Paraná who suffered losses due to major frosts in July will be compensated. Cristina said that government “estimates losses of 18% to 20%, but it will take time to verify the true scale of the losses that occurred with the frosts,” with coffee and sugar cane producers being particularly affected. She announced a support plan for those who had lost income, with R$1.32bn (US$251.6m) in aid from the Fundo de Defesa da Economia Cafeeira (Funcafé) government fund, and R$1bn in credit lines from the state-owned commercial bank, Banco do Brasil (BB).
