NICARAGUA: Crackdown enters new phase

Nicaragua’s attorney general’s office has announced the start of trials of opposition (and non-opposition) figures arrested ahead of the 7 November general elections in which President Daniel Ortega is seeking a further term for the ruling left-wing Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN). This has prompted fresh concerns regarding human rights violations and breaches of due process. Meanwhile, the ongoing crackdown by the government on its opponents, or anyone seemingly critical of Ortega, continues, with NGOs and the country’s oldest and largest newspaper, La Prensa, most recently targeted.
